Cyanotype Sun Printing
An introduction to cyanotype, the camera-less photographic process. Leave with botanical prints in deep Prussian blue.
What you'll make
Two to three botanical sun prints in deep Prussian blue, composed from garden botanicals you chose yourself. Prints go home workshop-dry: let them cure flat for 24 hours, then they're ready to frame.
What you'll learn
- ·How a cyanotype exposure works: light-sensitive iron compounds, UV light, and water development.
- ·How to read a botanical for a strong print: flat versus dimensional material, translucency, and silhouette.
- ·Exposure judgment: watching the paper shift from yellow-green to grey-blue to know when it's ready.
- ·How to cure, display, and frame a finished print so the blue holds for years.
What's included
- Two to three sheets of pre-treated cyanotype paper
- Fresh botanicals, cut from the Guild garden the morning of class
- Glass pressing plates, a rinse station, and drying line
- Mounting corners and a cardstock mat for your favorite print
- A care card for curing and display
What to bring
- Nothing. All materials provided. We step out to the patio for the sun exposure itself, so bring a layer you can throw on.
